Case Study 1 - Damflask - Yorkshire Water Ron McCombe Associates Ltd designed and undertook the development of a sizeable access project at Damflask Reservoir near Sheffield for Yorkshire Water within the Peak District National Park. The aim of the scheme was to provide access for abled and less abled members of the community whilst protecting the quality and quantity of the water within the catchment area. Particular attention had to be paid to a 26 inch raw water pipe that ran under the proposed new footpath area. Ron McCombe Associates Ltd undertook the tender process, design and subsequent site management operations to ensure the smooth implementation of the scheme. This involved the production of method statements, risk assessments, CDM form 10 completion and registration with HSE. During the design stage of the project every effort was made to be sympathetic to the local wildlife by careful selection of trees to be removed ensuring minimal disturbance to the invertebrate life. Opportunities were identified and explored to enhance the conservation value of the traditional boundaries on the site and to link the site with other valuable habitats on secondary land. Two seven metre bridges were designed and constructed around the route along with post and rail fencing for public safety where required. The Damflask project represents a good example of the way Ron McCombe Associates Ltd is able to bring together the public and private sectors and in doing so demonstrates Yorkshire Waters commitment to balancing the need for protection of water production with creating the opportunities for public enjoyment of the Yorkshire Water Estate. This project has been enthusiastically received by members of the local community and presents excellent potential for publicity both locally and nationally. It was identified at an early stage in the project that there were opportunities to draw in additional funding for elements of the Damflask Project. Ron McCombe Associates Ltd undertook the liaison and successfully secured additional funding (£10,000) from the Great Yorkshire Conservancy for the Forestry Commission through the WIG scheme. The Damflask Project involved extensive liaison and consultation with a range of statutory and non-statutory bodies, the community and individual tenant farmers and stakeholders.
